As the nonprofit sector in Mexico expanded, organizations, companies, foundations, and community actors often lacked a clear view of who was working where and on what issues. The absence of accessible and reliable sector information limited organizations’ ability to identify credible partners, understand the landscape of services, and coordinate efforts across regions.

Without stronger information infrastructure and shared reference points, collaboration remained fragmented, smaller organizations had limited visibility, and opportunities for cross-sector coordination were frequently missed.

Work was conducted in collaboration with CEMEFI, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, to map Mexico’s philanthropic sector at the national level. Across all states, registered nonprofit organizations were documented, including populations served, community needs, and the operational challenges they faced in delivering services. Findings were organized into a sector information system and presented at national forums attended by universities, government agencies, companies, and civil society organizations.

The sector mapping contributed to CEMEFI’s information infrastructure and provided an evidence base for frameworks used to support the development of philanthropy and corporate social responsibility in Mexico. Research findings supported dialogue between government and civil society on the legal and fiscal conditions affecting organized philanthropy and informed national discussions on the sector.
